The term vinyasa is derived from the Sanskrit nyasa, which means “to place,” and the prefix vi, “ in a special way.” The vinyasa is meant to place in a special way by using the breath to movement synchronizing one posture (pose) to the next. So the Vinyasa Flow thus suggests a practice in which we consciously place the body-breath-mind in the constant flow of space and time. The Vinyasa Flow yoga generates heat, and there can be practiced in a vigorous, dynamic and stimulating manner, soft and gentle, and restorative practice by using ujjayi breath. Ujjayi breath is the breathing technique used and it’s done by inhaling and exhaling in a rhythm manner through the nose. The Vinyasa Flow can also be applied to many levels of an individual practitioner, and practiced with many variations of choices to honor where one is at and/or challenge oneself of limitations of the possibilities through the practice. Perhaps the Vinyasa Flow is one of the most attractive forms of yoga practice today, variously resonating with the spirit, intentions, and life experiences of different teachers and students. Hence, the vinyasa method includes assessing the needs of the individual practitioner or group, and then builds a complementary practice to meet those needs. The vinyasa also can be practiced and emphasized as an artful approach to living, a way of applying the skill and awareness of yoga to all rhythms and sequences of life, including self-care, relationships, work, personal evolution, social interaction, and so forth.
